Developmental Concept Identity And Identity Confusion

Developmental Concept # 1: Identity versus Identity Confusion According to Erikson, good relationships have a strong sense of fidelity. This means that, when fidelity is well established between people, genuine and secure relationships can be formed, leading to a sense of belonging. Erikson’s fifth stage of psychosocial development, identity versus identity confusion, describes the crisis that adolescents face, usually between the ages of 12 to 18 (Papalia Martorell, 2015). During these formative years, teenagers are faced with the task of identifying who they are and who they can become. These are years of revolt and experimentation. This is the time in which adolescents will question and confront everything and everyone. What may often be seen a rebellion, is the result of a crisis underway. Teens must experiment with a wide variety of social concepts before gravitating to those who best help establish a strong sense of self. During these risky years, some teens may strengthen qualities of already formed identities carried ove r from earlier experiences. Others may depart, in protest, and gravitate toward new, unexplored possibilities to help create a unique self-concept. Therefore, it is during these tumultuous years, that adolescents develop the virtue of fidelity; sustained loyalty and faith toward elemental building blocks in the formation of their identity of the self (McLeod, 2013).
